History of La Pieta

La Pieta, located at 790 Sto. Rosario Street (McArthur Highway) in Barangay Sto. Rosario, Angeles City, Pampanga, was formally established in 1969 under the municipality's Private Memorial Park Type Cemetery Ordinance, enacted during the tenure of Mayor Eugenio Suarez and Vice Mayor Alberto Pamintuan. This law mandated that private memorial parks allocate at least five percent of their land parcels for charity burial of indigent residents-those who had lived in Angeles for at least two years-free of charge. This initiative enabled the city to partner with La Pieta and other private parks to construct niche burial areas for the poor, addressing overcrowding in older public and Catholic cemeteries.

Within a few years, the park grew into one of Angeles City's most recognized memorial landscapes. Built on spacious and well-landscaped grounds along a major highway, La Pieta provided traditional burial plots, columbarium niches, and a chapel, marking it as a dignified, full-service funeral venue that catered to both paying clients and indigent families under the ordinance's provisions. Over the decades, it maintained its reputation for serene ambiance, while evolving facilities such as cremation services and additional columbarium spaces were added. Reviewers have noted that it has been "around at least since the 70s" and continues to offer a peaceful and accessible environment for remembrance and daily visits.
